Overview

Dramatic sea cliffs, a natural rock arch, and an 18-meter waterfall on Nishinoshima Island in the Oki Islands.

Kuniga Coast on Nishinoshima Island in the Oki Islands runs along some of the most dramatic sea cliffs along the Sea of Japan. The 257-meter Matengai cliff face drops almost vertically into turquoise water, and a grassy trail runs along the top. Elsewhere on the coast, the Tsutenkyo natural rock arch spans a channel carved by centuries of wave action, and an 18-meter waterfall drops directly into the sea. Horses and cattle graze freely along the coastal meadows, completely unbothered by the scenery. A sightseeing boat from Urago Port covers the whole coastline if walking is not appealing. The Oki Islands require a ferry from Sakaiminato or a short flight, but the remoteness keeps the coast unhurried.
