Opened in 1965, the Kumaya Art Museum displays the private collection of the Kumaya family.
The Kumaya Art Museum in Hagi displays a private collection of around 3,000 items within an estate built in 1768 by a wealthy merchant purveyor to the Choshu domain. Four of the estate's original buildings, including the main house, annex, storehouse, and treasure house, are designated Important Cultural Properties. Highlights include paintings by Muromachi-period master Sesshū Tōyō, tea utensils by Raku ware master Keinyū, and ceramics by painter-potter Ogata Kenzan. On permanent display is what is considered the oldest piano in Japan, a British-style pianoforte given to the Kumaya family in 1828 by German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold.
