Kumano Nachi Taisha
shrine
熊野那智大社
Mountain shrine offering iconic views of a pagoda framed by Japan's tallest waterfall.
A stunning spiritual site blending Shinto and Buddhist beliefs. The complex sits high in the mountains and provides the classic, breathtaking view of the three-story pagoda with the towering Nachi Waterfall in the background. It is a key destination on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.
One of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, set on a mountainside directly above Nachi Falls. The approach via the Daimonzaka stone-paved staircase lined with cedar takes about 30 minutes from the base and follows the original Kumano Kodo pilgrim route. The Seiganto-ji pagoda adjacent to the shrine is a Buddhist structure, and the two together represent the historic fusion of Shinto and Buddhist practice at Kumano that drew emperors and pilgrims for over a thousand years.
