Local tips
One of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, set on a mountainside directly above Nachi Falls. The approach via the Daimonzaka stone-paved staircase lined with cedar takes about 30 minutes from the base and follows the original Kumano Kodo pilgrim route. The Seiganto-ji pagoda adjacent to the shrine is a Buddhist structure, and the two together represent the historic fusion of Shinto and Buddhist practice at Kumano that drew emperors and pilgrims for over a thousand years.
