Overview
The most vital sub-shrine on the Kumano Kodo, marking the threshold to the sacred Hongu precinct.
Considered the most important of the 99 minor shrines (Oji) along the Kumano Kodo. Passing through its gate traditionally symbolized a pilgrim's spiritual awakening and direct entry into the sacred precinct of Kumano Hongu Taisha. Today, it serves as a highly popular starting point for a stunning half-day hike to the grand shrine.
