Overview

Japan's top three rapids on the Kuma River, white-water rafting through a gorge lined with cedar and stone bridges.

The Kuma River is one of Japan's three fastest-flowing rivers, offering exciting Class III-IV rafting through a scenic gorge. The traditional 'kudaribune' wooden boat rides have operated here for centuries, and modern rafting guides combine adrenaline with commentary on the river's history. The surrounding scenery of steep, forested banks is gorgeous.

Local tips

Book with Land Earth. Their guides are the most experienced. The rapids are biggest after June rainy season but before the August heat.
