Kuhonji Temple

Kuhonji Temple on Yakushima dates to 1488 and the Nichiren Buddhist priest Nichizo Shonin, who spread the Lotus Sutra across the island. A mandala believed to be in Nichizo's own hand is occasionally exhibited. The temple grounds also hold a memorial marking the sixth anniversary of the death of Shimazu Yoshihisa, the 16th head of his clan, who played a central role in unifying Kyushu in the late 16th century. Arrive by 5:45 pm to hear the daily ringing of the temple bell, which carries across the cedar forest that surrounds the complex.
