The atmospheric center of Shingon Buddhism, situated on a mountain plateau. It is famous for Okunoin, a vast, moss-covered cemetery housing the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi. Staying overnight in a temple lodging (shukubo) here is an unforgettable cultural experience.

Walk through the Okunoin cemetery at dusk or early evening; the stone lanterns cast long, moody shadows across the moss.
