The original forested hiking trail up to Mount Koya, marked by ancient stone stupas.
The original 24-kilometer pilgrimage trail leading up from the valley to the sacred Mount Koya. The path is marked every 109 meters by an ancient, five-tiered stone stupa (choishi). Hiking this forested trail is the most traditional and rewarding way to enter Koyasan.
If you cannot hike the full 24 kilometers, take the train to Kii-Hosokawa Station to hike just the final, most scenic stretch.
