Shingon Buddhist temple in Takeo offering serene atmosphere and contemplative gardens beyond the onsen experience.
Koya-ji Temple in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, is a Shingon Buddhist temple set in a lush forest that offers a deeply calming alternative to the town's popular onsen. The temple is particularly known for its grove of ancient camphor trees, some over 3,000 years old, whose massive root systems create cathedral-like canopies overhead. A moss-covered stone path leads through the grounds, past weathered Buddhist statues and quiet meditation spots. The temple also offers zazen meditation sessions and sutra-copying experiences for visitors who want to engage more deeply with the practice. Combined with a soak at Takeo Onsen and a stroll past the famous Takeo Shrine torii gate, it makes for a restorative day trip from Saga City or Nagasaki.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
