Overview

A flower-filled Nichiren temple steps from Hasedera that most visitors walk right past, with seasonal blooms year-round.

While crowds queue at neighboring Hasedera Temple, Kosokuji sits quietly just across the lane with an equally beautiful but far more intimate garden. The temple is renowned among flower enthusiasts for its extraordinary variety, plum blossoms in February, wisteria in April, hydrangea in June, and camellias in winter. A small aviary in the garden adds to the charm, and the 200-yen entry fee keeps crowds minimal.

Local tips

Visit during hydrangea season (early June). Kosokuji has the same varieties as Hasedera next door but with a fraction of the crowd, and photography is much easier.
