The gourd-shaped Koshigaike Pond provides an idyllic setting for a stroll in the Nakayama Shichiri area of Gero.
Koshigaike, or Pond of the Filial Son, sits within the Hida Kisogawa Quasi-National Park and takes its name from a local folk tale. According to the story, a man named Sakon traveled to Lake Biwa to bring back water for his dying mother, but she passed before he returned. When he collapsed in grief, the water he had carried spilled and mixed with his tears to become this pond. The gourd-shaped lake draws visitors through all four seasons, offering cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn foliage, and snow in winter. Sakon is venerated at Kadohara Shinmei Shrine, a 5-minute drive away.
