Overview

Hakodate's oldest Zen temple, founded in 1633, with an elaborately carved sanmon gate featuring dragons and lions that few visitors ever discover.

Founded as a branch of Matsumae Hogenji Temple, Koryuji is a Soto Zen temple with nearly four centuries of history. The current main hall, rebuilt around 1900, features one of Hokkaido's most impressive carved gates, its intricate lion and dragon reliefs rival those of far more famous temples. The peaceful cemetery behind offers views across the harbor to Mount Hakodate.

Local tips

Stand directly under the sanmon gate and look up. The carved dragons are remarkably detailed and easy to miss if you walk straight through.
