Overview

A quiet haiku poet's temple where Matsuo Basho once meditated, with a thatched-roof hermitage overlooking Kyoto.

Konpuku-ji is a small Rinzai Zen temple in the Ichijoji area, famous for its connection to haiku master Matsuo Basho. The Basho-an hermitage perched on the hillside offers sweeping views of Kyoto, and the moss garden below is a masterpiece of understated beauty. Yosa Buson later restored the hermitage and is also buried here.

Local tips

Visit in late November when the maple trees framing Basho-an turn fiery red. You'll likely have the hillside to yourself.
