Konpirasan Okusha (Inner Shrine)
shrine
金刀比羅宮奥社
The real summit of Konpira-san that 90% of visitors never reach, 583 more steps beyond the main shrine.
Most Konpira visitors stop at the main shrine after 785 steps, but the true summit, the Okusha, requires 583 additional steps through dense forest. The inner shrine is a tiny hall carved into the cliff face, decorated with tengu carvings. The solitude after the crowds below is remarkable, and the mountain forest is beautiful.
Start early morning to beat the heat and crowds. The Okusha stamp is a special collector's item. Bring your goshuin book.
