Kongosenji
temple
金剛山寺(矢田寺)
Temple in Yata hills known as O-Jizo-san for its unique ancient Jizo statues scattered across the grounds.
Kongosen-ji in Yamatokoriyama, also known as Yata-dera, becomes one of Nara Prefecture's most colorful destinations each June when over 10,000 hydrangea bushes in 60 varieties bloom across the hillside temple grounds in shades of blue, purple, pink, and white. Beyond the flowers, the complex holds Buddhist statuary, a rock garden, and forested walking paths with views across the Yamato Plain. Small Jizo bodhisattva figures are scattered throughout the grounds, giving the temple its affectionate nickname 'O-Jizo-san.' The hydrangea bloom is the peak draw, but autumn foliage and winter camellia offer quieter seasons with their own appeal.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
