Komyozenji Temple

光明禅寺
A hidden Zen rock garden steps from crowded Dazaifu Tenmangu. Kyushu's only karesansui dry landscape garden.
While thousands stream past to Dazaifu Tenmangu, this tiny Zen temple 50 meters away is usually empty. Its front garden of raked gravel represents the sea, while the rear moss garden symbolizes the continents. In autumn, the maple canopy turns the moss garden into a carpet of red and gold, one of Kyushu's finest hidden autumn spots.
Visit late November for peak maple viewing. The rear garden's red-on-green contrast is Kyushu's answer to Kyoto.
