Overview
A grand Pure Land temple near Zaimokuza Beach with Kamakura's largest gate, a lotus pond, and virtually no tourists.
The head temple of the Chinzei school of Jodo Buddhism, Komyoji boasts one of Kamakura's most impressive Sanmon gates yet remains almost deserted compared to the northern temple clusters. The spacious grounds include a beautiful lotus pond, ocean-facing garden, and a sand beach just behind the temple compound. In summer, the lotus blooms create a stunning scene framed by the massive gate.
Local tips
After visiting the temple, walk through the back gate directly onto Zaimokuza Beach. The combination of temple silence and ocean sound is a uniquely Kamakura experience.
