Thousands of stones are arranged in concentric circles on a purposefully leveled plateau at the Komakino Stone Circle site in Aomori.
The Komakino Stone Circle near Aomori dates to around 2000 BCE and consists of three complete rings and a partial fourth, forming a circle 55 meters in diameter. The site was deliberately leveled before construction and contains burial pits, evidence of pit dwellings, and deposits of ritual objects. A path leads into the center for a close look at the stones, and a southern mound provides an elevated view over the full arrangement. A small preservation museum 1.5 kilometers away explains Jomon-period life through artifacts from the site with English captions and hands-on exhibits for children. Entrance to the museum is free.
