Overview

Utilizing medicinal herbs has a long history in the Koka area in present-day Shiga Prefecture.

In Koka, Shiga Prefecture, knowledge of medicinal herbs was historically linked to the ninja who trained in the area. The Koka Medicine Museum explores this connection through tools, advertisements, and records tracing local medicine production from the Edo period through the Showa era. A 1676 ninja manual, the Bansenshukai, compiled by the Fujibayashi family, documents shinobi-gusuri, herbal preparations for common ailments, energy boosts on missions, and substances intended to weaken enemies or silence watchdogs. For a small fee and with advance booking, visitors can prepare a simple dish similar to what ninja ate on extended missions. Suitable for all ages.
