Kogu Shrine

Kogu Shrine sits on a hill in central Miyazaki long considered resilient against flooding and natural disaster, which made it the preferred site for the local Nobeoka domain's daimyo estate during the Edo period. The hill is associated with Jimmu, Japan's mythical first emperor, and tradition holds that his palace stood here before he departed to establish rule in what is now Nara. The current shrine building dates to 1976 and enshrines Jimmu, his wife Princess Ahiratsu, and two of their sons. A large stone monument erected in 1940 near the approach marks the site. The shrine is administered by the neighboring Miyazaki Shrine.
