Kogakuji Temple

Originally built in Aichi in 1644 before the Inagaki clan, who controlled Toba domain, relocated it to the present site in 1726. Their family graves remain within the grounds. The temple's most unusual objects are four painted fusuma sliding doors that once decorated the living quarters of the Nippon Maru, the grand warship built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 1592 Korean campaign. After the ship was dismantled, the doors went to Toba Castle and eventually to the temple when the castle was torn down in the Meiji era. The panels, painted with herons, roosters, and flowering plants, are designated Cultural Properties of Toba City.
