Overview

Secluded zen temple off the main road amid a bamboo forest, three kilometers southeast.

Koden-ji is a secluded Zen temple about three kilometers southeast of Saga's city center, reached via a narrow road that winds through a small bamboo forest before opening onto the quiet temple grounds. Founded during the Kamakura period, the temple is prized for its contemplative atmosphere and a beautiful moss garden that glows vivid green after summer rains. Few tourists make the journey out here, so you are likely to have the meditation hall and grounds largely to yourself. The bamboo-filtered light and absolute stillness make it a genuinely peaceful retreat from the more popular sightseeing circuits, and it pairs well with a visit to the ceramic towns of Arita or Imari about 30 minutes away.
