神戸港震災メモリアルパーク
A preserved section of collapsed waterfront left exactly as it fell in the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake.
This open-air memorial preserves a 120-meter section of Kobe's Meriken Wharf exactly as it was destroyed by the January 17, 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The buckled concrete, tilted lampposts, and cracked pier remain untouched as a visceral reminder. Adjacent panels tell the story of the 6,434 people who lost their lives. It's a profoundly moving stop on Kobe's waterfront walk.
Visit on January 17th when the memorial is lit with candles. Or any evening when the preserved ruins against the harbor lights are hauntingly beautiful.
