Kiyosu Castle
清洲城
Overview
Once capital of the powerful Owari domain, Kiyosu Castle's influence may have waned but its history endures.
Once the seat of the Owari domain and the site of the 1582 Kiyosu Conference, where Oda Nobunaga's surviving retainers gathered to determine succession after his death at Honnoji and effectively set the course for Japan's unification. The 1989 reconstruction sits along the Gojokawa River and houses a museum with samurai armor, weapons, and diorama displays that put the Sengoku period into context. The castle is compact compared to nearby Nagoya Castle, but its historical significance is disproportionate to its size. Views from the top floor extend across the Nobi Plain toward distant mountains, and the riverbank cherry trees make the grounds one of the more scenic spots in Aichi Prefecture during spring.
