The main exhibit at the Kitamaebune Ship Museum is the 1878 merchant’s home itself. Look for doors made from single panels of Akita cedar and massive, lacquer-coated pine beams spanning the main hall. After viewing the exhibits, walk the surrounding Hashitate district to see other stately merchant homes with their red-tiled roofs.
