Remote coral atoll 360 km from Naha with steep cliffs, phosphate-mining history, and zero tourist crowds.
Kitadaitojima is one of the two Daito Islands, a pair of isolated outposts in the Pacific Ocean roughly 360 kilometers east of Okinawa's main island. The island has no natural beaches; instead its edges are mostly raised coralline rock and steep cliffs dropping directly to the sea. Small parks and walking paths follow the rim in places, and the coralline substrate supports a distinctive plant community different from the main island. A reef wall drops off the island's edge into very deep water, making this a destination for experienced divers. Access is by flight from Naha, and the island's remoteness means relatively few visitors make the trip.
