Kishu Hera Zao (Bamboo Fishing Rods) and Kakuredani Fishing Pond

Hashimoto craftsmen have been making kishu hera zao fishing rods from local bamboo for over 100 years. Each rod is handcrafted by one of about 20 artisans, taking six months to a year to complete from start to finish. The rods are primarily used to catch crucian carp with a characteristic double hook. Visitors can try them at Kakuredani Fishing Pond, where a small fee lets you catch and release large carp. First-timers and anyone squeamish about bait will appreciate the local custom of using pieces of udon noodle or wheat gluten instead, making the experience accessible without any fishing background.
