Mt. Kintoki

Mt. Kintoki (1,212 m) in Hakone styles itself the birthplace of Kintaro, the boy of superhuman strength from Japanese folklore who was later taken on as a retainer by samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu and renamed Sakata no Kintoki. The shrine at the mountain's base honors him as a deity and protector of children. The annual festival on May 5 includes a footrace for children 12 and under, a lion dance, and a kids' sumo tournament. The summit trail passes boulders that may, or may not, have been tossed there by the legendary boy himself, and offers some of the clearest views of Mt. Fuji in the Hakone area.
