Overview

Small, atmospheric bathhouse featuring traditional cypress wood baths.

Yanagi-yu is the smallest of the seven public baths in Kinosaki Onsen, named after the willow trees ('yanagi') that line the canal in front of the building. The architecture is intensely traditional, with a rustic, cozy interior dominated by Hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood. This wood scent defines the experience, creating a calming, forest-like atmosphere inside the steam-filled room. The bath itself is notably deep, allowing for a vertical soak that is quite traditional. Despite its size, it is a favorite for those seeking a more intimate and less 'spa-like' environment compared to the larger modern facilities in the village. Like its neighbors, it maintains an open tattoo policy for all guests.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
