Kinomoto Jizōin Temple
temple
木之本地蔵院と蛙
This temple’s location at a major crossroads testifies to its significance: it was originally the center of Kinomoto-juku.
This temple at a historic crossroads in Kinomoto-juku was once visited by figures including Kukai and shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Its principal statue is a Jizo bodhisattva believed to heal eye ailments. According to temple lore, the garden's frogs offer prayers on behalf of worshippers, permanently closing one eye as an act of sacrifice whenever someone receives Jizo's aid. Thousands of small one-eyed frog figures left by grateful visitors line the temple grounds. You can also descend beneath the temple and walk a completely dark, winding corridor, an experience said to bring spiritual purification.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
