Kinmuto Pond
キンムトー
Overview
Kinmuto Pond is a beautiful clear pond deep in the mountains on the eastern side of Lake Kussharo.
Kinmuto Pond sits deep in the forested mountains on the eastern edge of Lake Kussharo in Hokkaido. It is fed by snowmelt and rainwater rather than springs, and the steep slopes surrounding it amplify small sounds, giving the place an unusually still atmosphere. A five-kilometer trail from Ikenoyu Onsen leads to the pond through the forest. Driving down the same trail is possible but only advisable for experienced off-road drivers due to the narrow and rocky surface. The pond is bear country. Carry a bear bell and make noise on the trail, or honk before leaving your car. The area sees fewer visitors than other Kussharo attractions.
