Built in 1956 to honor the tanuki protagonist of a local folktale, Kincho Shrine is said to have inspired scenes in Studio Ghibli's Pom Poko. The small compound overflows with tanuki figurines, tanuki-themed ema votive plaques, and a welcoming stone raccoon dog at the entrance. Komatsushima city embraces the legend with tanuki statues scattered throughout its streets.
