Overview

Towers, storehouses, and other buildings have been reconstructed on the former site of Kikuchi Castle, a mountaintop fortress dating to the seventh century.

Built in the 7th century on a 55-hectare mountaintop site in northern Kyushu as part of a network of fortresses protecting Dazaifu from potential invasion following Japan's defeat against Tang China and Silla in 663. Archaeological excavations uncovered remains of 72 structures, and several have been reconstructed, including an octagonal drum tower standing 15.8 meters tall, a stilted rice storehouse in the azekura-zukuri style, and a thatched-roof armory. Walking paths and outdoor observation decks overlook the surrounding landscape. The visitor center, Onkosouseikan, has models, artifacts, and a short film.
