Kibune Shrine
shrine
貴船神社
Water deity shrine with a red-lantern stairway and summer riverside dining platforms over the stream.
A water deity shrine in a forested valley north of Kyoto, famous for its red lantern-lined stone stairway approach. In summer, riverside restaurants build kawadoko platforms over the stream where diners eat nagashi-somen noodles flowing through bamboo channels. The shrine's water fortune slips reveal their message only when dipped in the sacred spring.
The riverside dining platforms (kawadoko) serve kaiseki over the flowing water in summer. Book ahead. Walk-ins during peak season are nearly impossible.
