Overview

An ancient shrine connected to the Momotaro legend, where a corridor of lanterns leads to the main hall.

Kibitsuhiko-jinja stands in the hills northeast of Okayama city, dedicated to the legendary warrior Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto, whose story is said to have inspired the folktale of Momotaro. The inner shrine was reconstructed in 1697, while the outer structures were rebuilt in 1936, giving the complex a mix of historical periods across its grounds. Stone lanterns line the approach through tall trees, and the atmosphere is quiet even on weekends. The honden, or main hall, is compact and carefully maintained. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the grounds at an easy pace.

Local tips

Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
