Overview
Volcanic hot spring village where the river itself runs warm enough for riverside bathing.
A hot spring village near the active volcanic crater of Mount Io, where strongly acidic sulfur waters flow directly from the earth. The Kawayu River itself is warm enough to bathe in, and in winter locals dig personal rotenburo in the snowbound riverbanks. The surrounding area provides easy access to both Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo.
