Overview
Ariake Sea tidal flats hosting the annual Gatalympics mud sports festival each June.
The Ariake Sea's extreme tidal range exposes vast glistening mudflats at low tide along Kashima's coast. Each June, the Gatalympics festival turns the mud into a sports arena, locals and visitors slog through mud bicycle races, tug-of-war, and obstacle courses. Outside festival season, the flats attract migratory shorebirds and offer an otherworldly landscape at sunset.
