Karonouron
restaurant
かろのうろん
Fukuoka's oldest udon shop (1882) serving soft noodles and goboten (burdock tempura).
Karonouron has been making Hakata-style udon since 1882, longer than any other shop in Fukuoka. Hakata udon uses soft, pillowy noodles rather than the firm, chewy type common in Osaka and Tokyo, and the dashi broth is clear and delicate. The goboten, burdock root wrapped in tempura batter and fried until golden, is the standard accompaniment. It adds crunch and earthy flavor to each bite of the soft noodle. The shop is small, counter seating only, and fills up quickly at lunch.
