Overview
The Kanoura Overlook, high on a cliff along National Route 101 in the town of Happō, offers broad views of the Sea of Japan and a distinctive black sand coastline.
The Kanoura Overlook sits on a cliff above National Route 101 in Happo, looking out over the Sea of Japan and a coastline of black sand. The dark beaches are a legacy of Hassei Mine, which operated just north of the site until 1989. Silver and copper were extracted from black rock, and the leftover slag was processed into fine particles and deposited along the shore. Across the road, the Shirakami Sanchi mountains form the backdrop. The roofed platform has picnic tables and faces west, making it a popular spot for sunset. Three small food stalls on-site serve grilled squid, set meals, and soft-serve ice cream.
Local tips
Clear days after rain offer the best visibility. Mountains and distant features pop against a washed-blue sky.
