Overview

The Kanmon Strait Museum is a state-of-the art facility showcasing the history of the vital waterway flowing just outside its doors.

The Kanmon Strait Museum in Moji, reopened after renovations in 2019, is designed to look like a ship leaving port and sits beside one of Japan's busiest waterways. The fourth-floor Promenade Deck lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows for watching container ships pass below. The atrium centers on a large curved projection screen showing four films about the strait's history. A spiral walkway connects touchscreen games, a submarine photography simulation, and panels that identify passing vessels in real time. The lower-floor Retro Lane reconstructs Moji Port street scenes from the 1890s to 1920s, with a moving streetcar, banana sellers, and a mix of bowler hats and traditional clothing.
