Forest waterfall in Maniwa surrounded by maple trees, known for autumn colors and wild monkeys.
At 110 meters high and 20 meters across, Kanba Falls in Okayama's Maniwa area tumbles down successive ledges of dark volcanic rock with a narrow formation called Carp Rock dividing the lower flow. A 100-hectare nature park surrounds the falls, with a maintained trail following a rocky stream through maples, katsuras, and zelkovas. In spring, fukuzakura cherry trees produce shaggy multi-petaled blossoms unique to the area. The trail also passes Tamadare Falls, a smaller cascade where rivulets drip from mossy rock with a light, percussive sound. Around 160 Japanese macaque monkeys live in the park; leave food in your bag as they will try to take it.
