Overview

At the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum, feudal-era Japan comes to life once more.

Two of the oldest surviving ashigaru houses stand preserved at this small museum in Kanazawa's Nagamachi district. Ashigaru were foot soldiers who held the lowest rank within the samurai class during the Edo period in the Kaga domain. Unlike the earthen-walled, gate-flanked homes of middle-ranking samurai visible along the surrounding streets, ashigaru residences were simpler, typically surrounded by hedges. The museum preserves the Takanishi and Shimizu family houses, both open to walk through. Displays explain ashigaru housing design, daily life, and their role in the social hierarchy of feudal Japan, offering a grounded view of the lower rungs of samurai society.
