Overview
Remote 'mud bath' onsen in a volcanic valley with three different water sources.
Doroyu Onsen, meaning 'Mud Water Onsen,' is a tiny, remote settlement in the mountains of Akita. The Okuyama Ryokan is the heart of the village, offering day-trip access to its distinctive baths. It is unique for providing three different types of spring water: a milky-white sulfur spring, a clear bicarbonate spring, and a rusty iron spring. The facility features several outdoor pools scattered across the property, including one that is essentially a large mud pool. The surrounding landscape is barren and volcanic, with steam rising from the ground in every direction. It is a primal and deeply relaxing location that feels completely disconnected from modern life.
