Kamosu Shrine
神魂神社
4.4Est. 30Matsue, Chugoku
Overview
Home to the oldest Taisha-zukuri style building in Japan.
This National Treasure shrine is older in architectural style than the famous Izumo Taisha. It feels ancient and primitive, tucked away in a quiet forest. It offers a profound sense of the Shinto roots of the Izumo region without the crowds of the main shrines.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
