Overview
Hidden 'secret' hot spring village tucked into a narrow mountain valley.
Kamisaki Onsen is known as the 'Oshushiro' (White Medicine of the North) and has been a site for therapeutic bathing for over 600 years. The village consists of several historic wooden ryokans built into a steep hillside. Yubune refers to the public bathing options available in this atmospheric pocket of Miyagi. The water is known as 'kizu-yu' (wound water) because of its legendary ability to heal cuts and skin conditions. The bathing areas are traditional, often featuring high-quality wood and stone work. The entire village feels like a movie set, with narrow stone stairs and buildings that have remained largely unchanged for a century.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
