Kamioka Castle
神岡城
Overview
Reconstructed hilltop fortress in former mining town Kamioka, housing exhibits on local history and samurai culture.
Kamioka Castle sits on a cliff above the Takahara River in the mountain town of Hida, in a position that controlled movement through the valley during the Sengoku period. The current structure is a 1970 reconstruction on the original stone foundation, and the interior holds a collection of local history exhibits covering the castle's feudal history and the surrounding Hida region. The castle is small and can be visited in about 30 minutes, but the cliff-edge setting above the river and the view down the narrow valley are genuinely good. Hida itself is a base for visiting the Kamioka mine district, which later became the site of a famous neutrino detection experiment in the 1980s.
Local tips
The keep stairs are steep and narrow — take your time and hold the railing. Socks are required inside (shoes off at the entrance).
