Kaminarimon Gate
landmark
雷門
The enormous red lantern at the center of the Kaminarimon (thunder gate) is a vivid symbol of Asakusa, and is almost as famous as Sensoji Temple itself.
The massive red lantern at the center of Kaminarimon Gate weighs 700 kilograms and stands 3.9 meters tall, its front marked with the characters for 'Thunder Gate' and its back with the older name Furaijinmon. The current gate was built in 1960 funded by Matsushita Konosuke, founder of what is now Panasonic, after nearly a century without a permanent structure following a fire in 1866. The gate has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times since the 12th century, with interim versions including one marking Tokyo's designation as capital and another celebrating Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War. During the Sanja Festival the lantern collapses to let portable shrines pass through.
