Kamegaoka Stone Age Site
亀ヶ岡石器時代遺跡
Overview
Archaeological site famous for yielding the iconic, goggle-eyed Jomon clay figurines.
This famous archaeological site represents the final stages of the Jomon period. It is best known as the discovery site of the iconic 'Goggle-eyed Dogu' clay figurine. The low-lying wetland environment contributed to the incredible preservation of lacquerware and pottery found here. Kamegaoka-style pottery is now held by major museums worldwide, including the Tokyo National Museum, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The nearby Tsugaru City Kizukuri Kamegaoka Archaeological Museum (木造亀ヶ岡考古資料室) displays artifacts unearthed at the site, including the famous goggle-eyed dogu figurines, earthenware, stone tools, and lacquerware.
Local tips
While the site itself is mostly open fields, you can see a massive statue of the goggle-eyed Dogu towering over the nearby Kizukuri train station.
