Kamakura Komachi Side Streets
鎌倉小町裏通り
Overview
The quiet lanes flanking Kamakura's famous Komachi-dori, hiding artisan shops and local cafés away from the crowds.
While Komachi-dori itself is packed with tourists, the parallel back streets one block east and west contain Kamakura's most interesting independent shops. Here you'll find a knife sharpener working from a converted house, a ceramicist selling only Kamakura-bori lacquerware, and coffee roasters in converted Showa-era homes. The contrast with the main street's bustle is immediate and dramatic.
Local tips
The unmarked coffee shop in the wooden house on the east side street (look for a small hand-painted sign) roasts single-origin Japanese-style and is worth seeking out.
